Hope College was the second building built for Brown University to serve as a dormitory. Nicholas Brown was the sole financier and suggested that it be named in honor of his sister Hope. It is one of the few dormitories in the country that is called a college. Hope College served as military housing for Brown students that were also Navy students during the Great War in 1918 and during World War II for an army unit during 1942-43. Hope College has seen many renovations over the years and is still used as a dormitory.
